మన 60 తెలుగు సంవత్సరాలకు ఆ పేర్లు ఎలా వచ్చాయో చిన్న పురాణ గాధ ఉంది. ఒకానొక రోజు శ్రీ నారద మునీశ్వరునికి తానూ సమస్త ఐహిక సుఖాలను జయించాను అని, పూర్తిగా ఇంద్రియ నిగ్రహాన్ని సాధించాను అని గర్వం కలిగి తన తోటి మునీశ్వరుల దగ్గర మాయావి అయిన శ్రీ మహా విష్ణువు కూడా తన ఇంద్రియ నిగ్రహ సాధనను పాడు చేయలేడు అని ప్రగల్భాలు పలికారు. ఆ విషయం తెలుసుకున్న శ్రీ మహా విష్ణువు నారదునికి ఒక గుణపాటం నేర్పించాలి అని అనుకున్నారు. మరునాడు ఉదయం నారద మునీశ్వరుడు సూర్య నమస్కారానికి ముందు ఒక సరస్సులో స్నానం ఆచరించి పైకి లేచే సరికి శ్రీ మహా విష్ణువు మాయ వలన తన గతాన్ని పూర్తిగా మరచిపోయిన ఒక సుందరమైన స్త్రీగా మారిపోతారు. స్త్రీగా మారిన నారదునికి ఒక బ్రాహ్మణుడితో వివాహం జరుగుతుంది. వారికి పుత్రులు జన్మించడం బాలారిష్ట దోషంతో చనిపోవడం జరుగుతూ ఉంటుంది. ఆ విధంగా 60 మంది పుత్రులు స్త్రీ రూపంలో ఉన్న నారదుడికి జన్మించి చనిపోవడంతో నారదుడు శ్రీ మహా విష్ణువును వేడుకుంటాడు. శ్రీ మహా విష్ణువు నారదున్ని క్షమించి నారదుని బ్రహ్మ చర్య రూపాన్ని నారదునికి తిరిగి ప్రసాదిస్తారు. తన అహంకార పూరిత మాటల వలన ప్రాణాలు కోల్పోయిన తన బిడ్డల స్మారకార్ధం ఏదైనా చేయమని నారదుడు విష్ణువుని వేడుకొనగా శ్రీ మహా విష్ణువు షష్ఠి పూర్తి కాల చక్రమలో ఏర్పడుతున్న సంవత్సరాలకు చనిపోయిన నారదుని బిడ్డల పేర్లను ప్రసాదిస్తాడు.

There is a short mythological legend behind how the 60 Telugu years received their names.

One day, Sage Narada became proud, believing that he had conquered all worldly pleasures and achieved complete self-control over his senses. He boasted among his fellow sages that even the illusion-weaving Lord Maha Vishnu could not break his mastery over his senses.

Learning of this, Lord Maha Vishnu decided to teach Narada a lesson. The next morning, before performing his sun salutations, Narada took a bath in a lake. As he rose from the water, due to the illusion (Maya) created by Lord Maha Vishnu, he completely forgot his past and transformed into a beautiful woman.

In this female form, Narada gets married to a Brahmin, and they have sons who unfortunately pass away one after another during their childhood due to various misfortunes. After giving birth to 60 sons in the form of a woman and losing every single one of them, Narada intensely prays to Lord Maha Vishnu.

Moved by his plea, Lord Maha Vishnu forgives Narada and restores him to his original celibate sage form. Filled with grief, Narada begs Vishnu to grant him a way to honor the memory of his children who lost their lives due to his arrogant words. In response, Lord Maha Vishnu bestows the names of Narada's deceased children upon the 60 years that make up the cyclical wheel of time (the Shashti Poorti time cycle).
