In our ancient Sanatana Hindu tradition, rivers are revered as goddesses, and since water is the fundamental source of life, these life-giving rivers were worshipped daily in ancient times. In South India, the Godavari River is exceptionally magnificent and sacred, which is why we devoutly call it the 'South Ganges' or 'Mother Godavari'. Born in the Brahmagiri Hills at Trimbakeshwar near Nashik in Maharashtra, this sacred river flows through the states of Maharashtra, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh before finally merging into the Bay of Bengal at Antarvedi.
దక్షిణ భారతదేశానికి గోదావరి నదిని తీసుకురావడానికి మహర్షి గౌతముడు తీవ్రమైన తపస్సు చేశాడు. భూమిపై తీవ్రమైన కరువు కాటలాలు ఏర్పడి, వర్షాలు పడక ప్రజలు అల్లాడిపోతున్నప్పుడు గౌతమ మహర్షి తన తపోశక్తితో శక్తివంతమైన వరుణ యాగం తలపెట్టి, ఆ వరుణ దేవుడిని ప్రసన్నం చేసుకుని ప్రతిరోజూ ఒక ధాన్యపు పంటను పండిస్తూ, ఆ ప్రాంతంలోని మునులందరికీ ఆకలి తీర్చేవారట. ఇది చూసి అసూయ పడిన కొందరు మునులు, గౌతముడిని ఇబ్బంది పెట్టాలని ఒక మాయోపాయం పన్నారు. ఒక బలహీనమైన ఆవును సృష్టించి, అది గౌతముడు పండిస్తున్న ధాన్యపు పొలంలోకి వెళ్లేలా చేశారు. గౌతముడు ఆ ఆవును పొలం నుండి పంపడానికి ఒక తేలికపాటి కర్రతో సున్నితంగా స్పృశించగానే, ఆ ఆవు అప్పటికప్పుడే ప్రాణాలు కోల్పోయింది. తాను చేసిన ఈ చర్యను గోహత్య మహాపాపంగా భావించిన గౌతమ మహర్షి తీవ్ర మానసిక అశాంతికి గురయ్యాడు. ఆ పాప విమోచనం కోసం ఆ పరమశివుడిని ప్రసన్నం చేసుకోవడానికి తీవ్రమైన తపస్సు చేశాడు. శివుడు ప్రత్యక్షమై, "ఈ పాపం పోవాలంటే నువ్వు గంగాదేవిని ఈ భూమిపైకి తీసుకువచ్చి, ఆమెతో అభిషేకం చేయించుకోవాలి" అని తెలియచేసారు.
To bring the Godavari River to South India, Sage Gautama performed intense penance. When severe droughts occurred, Sage Gautama performed a powerful Varuna Yagna and grew grain daily to feed the sages. Envious sages created a weak cow that died when Gautama gently touched it to drive it out of the field. Distressed by this sin of cow slaughter, Gautama performed severe penance to Lord Shiva, who instructed him to bring Goddess Ganga down to the earth for purification.
అప్పుడు గౌతముడు తన తపస్సుతో పరమశివుడిని మళ్లీ ప్రసన్నం చేసుకోగా, శివుడు తన జటాజూటంలోని గంగను భూమిపైకి విడుదల చేసారు. ఆ గంగతో పాటు గౌతముడి తపశ్శక్తి తోడవడంతో ఆ నది 'గౌతమి' నదిగా రూపాంతరం చెందింది. ఆ నదిలో స్నానం చేయగానే గౌతముడికి గోహత్య పాపం తొలగిపోయింది. అందుకే గోదావరిని 'గౌతమీ నది' అని కూడా పిలుస్తారు.
Then, Sage Gautama once again appeased Lord Shiva, and Shiva released Ganga from his matted locks onto the earth. With Ganga combining with Gautama's ascetic energy, the river transformed into the "Gautami" River. As he bathed, his sin was absolved, which is why Godavari is also known as the "Gautami River".
గోదావరి నది ప్రవహించే మార్గంలో అనేక ఉపనదులుగా విడిపోయి ప్రవహిస్తుంది. ఇలా గోదావరి నది చీలిపోవడానికి ఒక పురాణ గాథ ఉంది. వశిష్ఠ మహర్షి తన పుత్రులను కోల్పోయిన శోకంలో గోదావరిలో దూకి ఆత్మహత్య చేసుకోవడానికి ప్రయత్నించగా, గోదావరి మాత తన ప్రవాహవేగంతో ఆయనను బయటపడేసింది. అప్పుడు కృతజ్ఞతగా వశిష్ఠుడు ఈ నదిని ఏడు పాయలుగా ప్రవహించమని దీవించాడు. అప్పటి నుండి గోదావరి నది సప్తగోదావరిగా ప్రవహిస్తుంది. ఆంధ్రప్రదేశ్లో గోదావరి నది తుల్య, ఆత్రేయ, వశిష్ఠ, వైనతేయ, గౌతమి, భరద్వాజ, విష్ణుపుత్రి అనే ఏడు పాయలుగా చీలి ఏడు పవిత్ర సంగమాలను ఏర్పరుస్తుంది.
ఈ సృష్టిలోని సమస్త జీవరాశుల తలరాతలు నిర్ణయించే ఆ బ్రహ్మ దేవుడి కమండలంలోని తీర్ధమే ఈ భూమిపై ఉన్న సమస్త జలరాశికి మూలాధారం. ఆ బ్రహ్మ దేవుడి కమండలంలోని నీటికి ఉన్న ఆ అమూల్యమైన ప్రాణశక్తికి ఉన్న పేరే పుష్కరుడు. నవగ్రహాలలో బృహస్పతి (గురు గ్రహం) ఒక రాశి నుండి మరొక రాశికి మారినప్పుడు, బృహస్పతి ఏ రాశిలో ప్రవేశిస్తే ఆ రాశికి సంబంధించిన నదికి పుష్కరాలు వస్తాయి.
The holy water in Lord Brahma's kamandalu contains the life force named Pushkaru. According to astrology, whenever Brihaspati (Jupiter) enters a specific zodiac sign, the Pushkaralu festival is observed for the river associated with that sign.
సింహరాశిలోకి గురువు ప్రవేశించినప్పుడు గోదావరి నదికి పుష్కరాలు జరుగుతాయి. మొదటి 12 రోజులను 'ఆది పుష్కరాలు' అని, చివరి 12 రోజులను 'అంత్య పుష్కరాలు' అని అంటారు.
2027 వ సంవత్సరం జూన్ 25వ తేదీ రాత్రి 5 గంటల 29 నిమిషాలకు బృహస్పతి కర్కాటక రాశి నుండి సింహరాశి ప్రవేశంతోటి గోదావరి నదికి పవిత్ర పుష్కరాలు ప్రారంభమవుతాయి. అయితే బృహస్పతి సింహరాశిలోకి ప్రవేశించే సమయానికి సూర్యోదయం జరగకుండా ఉండటం వల్ల గోదావరి నదికి పుష్కరాలు 2027 వ సంవత్సరం జూన్ 26వ తేదీ శనివారం నుండి ప్రారంభమవుతాయి. పంచాంగ పరిభాషలో చెప్పాలంటే స్వస్తిశ్రీ చాంద్రమాన శ్రీ ప్లవంగ నామ సంవత్సర జ్యేష్ట మాస బహుళ షష్టి శనివారం శతభిషా నక్షత్రంలో సూర్యోదయం ఉదయం 5 గంటల 56 నిమిషాలకు పవిత్ర గోదావరి నది పుష్కరాలు ప్రారంభమై 12 రోజులపాటు కొనసాగి 7 జూలై 2027తో గోదావరి నది యొక్క పవిత్ర ఆది పుష్కరాలు పూర్తి అవుతాయి.
The sacred Pushkaralu for the Godavari River commence with the transit of Jupiter from Cancer to Leo on the night of June 25, 2027, at 5:29 PM. However, since sunrise has not occurred by the time Jupiter enters Leo, the Godavari Pushkaralu officially begin on Saturday, June 26, 2027, concluding on July 7, 2027.

On the 12th and final day, this day is favorable for anyone who could not perform the sacred river bathing ritual on the aforementioned 11 days for any reason—such as ritual impurity due to nature, ashoucham (death in the family), or any other reason—to perform the sacred river bathing or ancestral tarpanam rituals on this final day.

Generally, all members of a family take the Pushkara bath together at the same time. Since each person has a different birth star (Nakshatra), you should primarily consider the Nakshatra of the head of the family (the eldest member or the one who performs ancestral tarpanam), and the entire family should perform the sacred river Pushkara bath on that specific day.
